Relatively low-level exposure to common pesticides -- probably from residues on foods -- doubles kids' risk of ADHD, Harvard researchers find.

Kids with higher-than-average levels of pesticide metabolites were about twice as likely to have ADHD as kids with undetectable levels of pesticide metabolites, find Marc C. Weisskopf, PhD, ScD, associate professor of environmental health and epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, and colleagues.

"This raises concerns that ubiquitous pesticides may be contributing to the national burden of ADHD, which already is quite high,"

3/26/2010 - Notting Hill
Notting Hill started lambing very early this year; we may have some true "spring" lambs available for Easter. Spring lambs are approx 30 lbs and sold live for $60 (no processing). Please contact us directly via email, if interested.

2/11/2010 - Briarmead
At this time of year with much SNOW on the ground and this past season's beef and lamb entirely sold out, we look ahead to warmer weather and our next butchering date in May-June; place your orders now.  We appreciate all of the feedback about this year's healthy and delicious beef and lamb.  The beef has excellent, rich flavor that has made several customers comment on how it makes conventional feedlot beef taste oh-so-BLAND.   Additionally, Briarmead lamb chops are planned as the centerpiece of a local professional chef's upcoming gourmet dinner; sure to please the palates of a group of discriminating guests.  We'll let you know how that comes out in March!

Cornish Cross

The Cornish Cross is the standard meat production bird; it boasts excellent growth rates and an efficient conversion of feed to lower costs.

Raised on Pasture in specially designed “Chicken Tractors” these birds provide a healthy, cost-effective alternative to industrial chickens.

The Cornish Cross is also bred to provide the most breast meat of any bird – so if that is the favorite part of your meal… these are the birds for you!

Beatrix Farm provides these stellar birds for your enjoyment.

Label Rouge” method Pastured Chickens

Free range pastured chickenLabel Rouge is the Traditional Artisan label for France established in 1965 as a direct response to the industrialization of poultry farming.  The standard has the following requirements:

Breed

  • Hardy breeds, selected for the quality of their meat and their slow growth (golden or black feathers).
  • NVPG uses Red Rangers, bred from birds imported from Brittany and Burgundy.

Farming methods

  • As soon as their feathers are fully developed, the fowl are let outside and allowed to roam free on large grassy and/or shady areas comprising:
  • Unlimited range for traditional chicken reared “in total freedom”.
  • NVPG birds are in open coops with 100% Free access to pasture and woods… they are not caged in any way.

Feed

  • Their feed must contain at least 75% cereals and cereal products during the fattening period.
  • NVPG uses Certified Organic grains (No Soy).

Age

  • Label Rouge traditional chickens are not slaughtered until they reach an age ranging between 81 and 110 days - this is at least twice as old as a standard chicken.
  • NVPG will begin processing at 81 days.

Since the birds are slower growing and bred to forage actively, they yield a particularly rich and flavorful product, but they require additional feed, longer growing times and increased pasture management (owing to their 100% open ranging and higher predator losses).

NVPG Guild farms Notting Hill and Second Wind currently offer this traditional approach, we invite you to taste the difference.
